Among the thousands of political
prisoners in Burma, there are still fifteen (15) Members of
Parliament (MPs) imprisoned for their political affiliation
and activities with the democratic movement.
Some have been in prison since being elected in
the 1990 General Elections which the Burmese military junta
has refused to recognise the resounding victory of democrats.
For example, Dr. Zaw
Myint Maung, age 53 and a National League for
Democracy MP, has been in prison since 1990. His total
sentence is 37 years. If he serves his full sentence, he will
be 76 when he is released. Or Dr. Than
Nyein, born in 1936 and a MP from the National
League for Democracy - he will be 78 years old if he serves
his full sentence.
In 2004, the Alliance for Reform and Democracy
(ARDA) embarks on an Asian-wide campaign to gather support and
solidarity imprisoned Burmese MPs from fellow Asian
legislators, political parties and members of the public. ARDA
is pioneering a campaign for Asian legislators, organisations
and individuals to 'adopt' a Burmese-MP-in-Prison (BMPP).
It only takes you less than a minute for you to
fill up the form
to join the campaign. It takes you less than an hour to write
a letter to a political prisoner in need of encouragement and
support, or to send a protest note to the Burmese government.
It takes you less than a month to organise a fund-raiser to
give much needed medicine to political prisoners who are
malnourished and in ill-health.
Please join us to free them and free
Burma!
