Brief Biographies of Burmese Members of Parliament in Prison
Dr May Win Myint

Dr. May Win Myint participated in 1988 nationwide democracy uprising. She became an active high ranking member in NLD and was elected in 1990 election from Mayangone constituency (2), Rangoon. She boycotted the military regime sponsored National Convention in December 1995 along with other NLD MPs.

On October 28, 1997, she and NLD members went to the Mayangone Township NLD office branch for a founding meeting of local NLD youth wing. The authorities did not allow them for the meeting and forced them to remove from their way. Later that night, the military intelligence persons arrested that night, her and other 7 members. The authorities accused them of disrupting of peace and stability of the country. They were sentenced to 7-year imprisonment each under section 5/j (of the 1950 Emergency Provision Act) and they had been denied access to legal counsel. At that time, she was the in charge of Central Women Wing.

Dr. May Win Myint, daughter of Thaung Nyunt, was born on March 8, 1950 in Moulmein, Mon State. She graduated in Medicine from Rangoon Institute of Medicine in 1976 and worked as a part-time Doctor for North-Okkalapa and Kyauktada Co-operative Clinics from 1978-81 and also at Rangoon General Hospital from 1981-883. From 1983-88 she worked at the Handicap Hospital.

Nine Nine

After the 1988 uprising, Nine Nine became the Chairman of Pazundaung Township NLD and elected from Pazundaung Constituency. As a result of his activities with the NLD, he was arrested on October 25, 1990 and sentenced to 10 years under Penal Code Article 122 (1). He was detained in Insein and Thayet prisons.

He rejoined the NLD movement as soon as he was released in 1999. He became a leading member of the Supporting Committee to the NLD youth led by Aung San Suu Kyi. His active activities in this committee and an article in the NLD bulletin were the reason for his arrest on September 13, 2000.

He was sentenced to another 21-years imprisonment in Insein Prison, December 20, 2000, under the act of 5(j), 17(20) and 17(1).

Dr. Zaw Myint Maung

Dr Zaw Myint Maung is currently under detention after being arrested for attending meetings in Mandalay in 1990 to form a provisional government. He was charged under Penal Code Article 122(1) and sentenced to 25 years imrisonment. The Election Commission dismissed him from Parliament on 27 November 1991 and banned him from running in future elections.

In March 1996 while in Insein Prison, he and other political prisoners were sentenced to a futher 7 years jail. They were charged under the 1950 Emergency Provision Act, Article 5(E), for producing a magazine marking the 75th anniversary of Rangoon University, and a magazine entitled New Blood Wave.

Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was also found in possession of a letter addressed to the UN Special Rapporteur on Burma, Professor Yozo Yokota, which detailed the situation of political prisoners in Insein Prison. In relation to this second charge, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was interrogated by MIS officers in prisoners in prison and was tortured and badly beaten.

Dr. Zaw Myin Maung was born on December 11, 1951. He graduated from mandalay Institute of Medicine in 1979. He was in charge of the Yurthitgyi Hospital, Sagaing Division and worked as a Chemistry Lecturer at Mandalay University from 1983-88. He participated in 1988 democracy uprising and later joined the National League for Democracy led by Aung San Suu Kyi. In 1990 general election, he was elected in Amarapura constituency (1).

Dr. Min Soe Lin

The authorities first arrested Dr. Min Soe Lin in Mudon, Mon State, on November 6, 1997. He was charged under Article 5 (j) of the 1950 Emergency Provision Act and was released from detention a few weeks. The reason for his arrest was his role in organizing celebrations for the 50th Mon National Day on 23 February 1997.

He joined the Mon National Democratic Front (MNDF) when it was formed after the 1988 uprising and was the General Secretary of the party.

In 1990 elections, he was elected from Ye Constituency (1), Mon State. For his activities in MNDF, he was sentenced to 7-year imprisonment in 1998.

 
Dr. Than Nyein

Dr. Than Nyein was arrested on 28 October 1997 following an attempt by the NLD to hold a meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi and NLD youth in Mayangone Township in Rangoon. On the day, the military authorities blocked a delegation of NLD members and leaders from holding the meeting, which included the Chairman, the two Vice-Chairmen and General Secretary Aung San Suu Kyi. Many NLD members were forced into waiting vehicles and dumped near townships outside Rangoon. On that midnight, the military authorities arrested Dr. Than Nyein along with seven others. All detainees were given 7 years imprisonment under Article 5(j) of the 1950 Emergency Provision Act. The sentences were handed down on 10 December 1997.

Dr. Than Nyein was forced to retire from bhis position as a doctor because of his involvement in the 1988 uprising. While he was running a private clinic in Thakayta Township in Rangoon, the military authorities arrested and charged him for not paying the registration fee for his private clinic. He was charged under the 1972 People's Health Affairs Act Article 9 (1c) and the authorities released him after he paid a fine. The NLD said that the authorities targeted him and did not arrest or charge other clinic owners.

Dr. Than Nyein, the son of Maung Sein, was born in Khanaung Village, Kyauktan, Rangoon on August 5 1937. He obtained a medical degree from Rangoon Institute of Medicine in 1963. He worked as an assistant doctor and township doctor from 1964-88 and was also a volunteer doctor for the United Nations in Sri Lanka from 1982-84. In NLD, he was Vice-Chairman or the Rangoon Division Organizing Committee.

 
Dr. Min Kyi Wan

Dr. Min Kyi Win (a) Kyi Win was a member of the Mon National Democratic Front which was banned by the authorities on 18 March, 1992. In the 1990 Elections, he was elected from Mudon constituency (2), a township of Mon State.

He was arrested, in September 5, 1998. He was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment under the Act of 5(j).
